Exploring the Specifications of the AWWA C800 Standard

Standards provide people and organizations with a basis for mutual understanding and are used as tools to facilitate communication, measurement, commerce, and manufacturing. For industries where there is very little room for mistakes, such standards bring consistency to the processes and products. That's why , when it comes to Water Works parts, the C800 Standard exists so both the manufacturer and water provider have expectations to fulfil.

The AWWA C800 Standard specifically applies to Underground Service Valves and Fittings from the water main to the water meter. This would include the adapter, corporation stop, coupling, service saddle, curb stop, fitting, and meter setter. By providing minimum requirements for these components, a commonality is made amongst manufacturers so that utilities can deliver the most reliable and safe drinking water to the public, taking into account the longevity of the infrastructure.

While commonly referenced by utilities in specification of product, when a part complies to the AWWA C800 Standard, this also means that it is up to ‘spec’. Although the standard has been around since the year 1940, it stays current with updates that are implemented by a committee that consists of general interest, producers, and users. Within the AWWA C800 Standard, there are a number of requirements for the products to be in compliance with, such as accepted materials, design, end connections, fabrication, permeation, verification, and delivery. For detailed information on the regulations that surround each of these requirements, take our ‘AWWA C800 Specification’ Cambridge Brass University (CBU) course.

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) has been providing and supporting effective management of water since 1881. In fact, today it makes up the largest organization of water supply professionals in the world. The AWWA C800 Standard keeps Water Works products streamlined, at top quality, and allows for a benchmark for manufacturers and utilities. Cambridge Brass is proud to create parts every single day that comply with the AWWA C800 Standard!
